Jim Cameron knew something was up when the “Bald Eagle” started doing the funky chicken. Wednesday’s earthquake caused the 8-foot polished metal statue at the corner of Front and Oak streets in downtown Port Angeles to sway wildly on its base. “It was bobbing back and for the. It looked like a cocktail toy,” said Cameron, co-owner of Olympic Mountaineering, which is located across the street.

The earthquake sent workers scrambling out onto sidewalks and knocked out power to parts of the North Olympic Peninsula, but area sustained none of the major damage that hit the Puget Sound area. The magnitude 6.8 earthquake hit at 10:54 a.m., according to the National Earthquake Information Center in Golden, Colo. The epicenter was about 10 miles northeast of Olympia at a depth of 33 miles below ground.

Tremors were felt from Neah Bay to Port Townsend. But no major structure damage or injuries were reported in Clallam County, said Joe Ciarlo, county emergency management coordinator. “For this magnitude of an earthquake, so far we’re looking pretty good, Ciarlo said. “I expected a lot more damage for something of this magnitude.”
