Washington State History
Fishing is an important tradition for Washington State Coastal Native Americans.
Your Name, 123456 Northwest Coastal Native American Fishing Fishing was important to many Native American tribes. It was a source of wealth and trade as well as food. Since fishing was so significant, there were many different tools used, such as nets, traps, and weirs. There was also a lot of a range of types of fish caught, salmon being one of the main ones. The Coastal Native Americans used various tools for fishing. A lot of fishing was done with a tool we still use today-nets. These were used in different ways, depending on how much fish was needed to be caught, and where the Native Americans were fishing. In the ocean, there could be, reef fishing, gillnet fishing, and seine fishing 1. For the rivers, there were different techniques. Other methods, like dip-net fishing, could be done in the river or the ocean 2. Also used for fishing were different kinds of traps and weirs. Most of these were placed and left in rivers, so that the fish going upstream would get caught. There were a variety of types of them, but all had the same purpose-to catch lots of fish at one time. The weir was like a fence that got fish caught in its bars 3, and there were different kinds of traps. One of the most common had fish go up it and not be able to get back down. As well as these, there were some other tools. Harpoons and spears 4, gigs and gorges 5, and gaffs 6 were all used in the same way-they were thrown at the fish and then pulled back in. The hook was much like fishing rods used today; it had a small, sharp hook attached to a line, and was dropped into the water 6. There were many different kinds of fish that the Native American caught. Among them were king fish, trout, eulachon, dogfish, smelt, rockfish, herring, flounder, cod, ling, halibut, salmon, and steelhead 7. Along with these, they got even more kinds of fish as well as porpoises, sea otters, and seals. From the beaches where they fished, they gathered clams, crabs, mussels, and oysters 8. Salmon were caught by almost all Coastal Tribes, and were very important to many of them. In spring, as the salmon headed upstream, the Coastal Indians would catch large quantities of them. In some tribes, the first one caught each year was honored. As well as for food, the Native Americans also used the salmon for their oil, making them even more valuable 9. As you can see, there were many different aspects to Coastal Native American fishing. It was a supply of wealth, food, and trade, and was very important to them. If not for fishing, the Northwest Coastal Native Americans would have found survival much harder.
