Directions: From this Unit, the student(s) will effectively work to scale, to develop a working drawing of a putt-putt golf course hole. Student(s) will develop a design, list of materials list and budget, for the construction of one hole. Not only will this Unit provide them with creative thinking skills, but give them the opportunity to use their math skills in creating a budget.
This Unit contains several lessons, designing, using power tools, and the construction phase of a project. During the Unit, one day will be used for assessment of the student's progress and actual construction of the project. Completion of the Unit includes; explaining their design process, construction, and the actual playing of the hole. Have Fun!

Procedure
Students will design a putt-putt golf course hole. The size is up to you. We will be storing your hole here at school, so we need to think in a small, but practical way. Each section (if there are more than one sections) of the hole, will measure 3 feet wide by 8 feet long. We have built others and if they are not easy to store, they will be dismantled the following year and used for another hole.
  1. Using a 1” = 1’ scale, we draw the shape of the golf course hole. We will provide an example or a copy of a drawing...

  2. The job is to design an individual golf hole. Where does the hole get located on your design? What types of obstacles will be on the hole? You may have a theme that you may be using to design your golf hole. You can make loops out of roof flashing, make floor elevations, etc. The sky is the limit, but you may wish to set some guidelines of your own for relative ease of construction sake and for storage. On your scale drawing, you also need to draw out the floor framing with dashed lines. Floor framing is 16” centers and the hole is 4” in diameter.

  3. Once the golf hole is designed and approved by the instructor. It will be up to you to make any corrections to your drawing before starting.

  4. Construction for the most parts is simple. For our 3 feet by 8 feet section(s) of the golf hole, you will use 2 x 4’s standing on edge for the rails or side fences. You will use 2 x 4’s laying flat for the floor framing, spacing on 16” centers. You will use 3/8” OSB board for the flooring, and have indoor/outdoor carpet for the green top layer. You will use construction adhesive to glue it down. For a larger hole, you can construct it virtually the same way or use 2” x 6”’s for rails and 2” x 4”’s standing for floor framing.

  5. You need not to sand the rails, but you can paint your rails or obstacles.

  6. Once you put the carpet into place, the obstacles can begin to be placed into position. Most obstacles may simply be cut pieces of 2” x 4”’s, which can simply be screwed down.

  7. Your Hole must be able to stack away for easy storage and doesn’t take much time to set up or take down...

  8. Your Golf Hole will be used in various activities around the school and can be used as a Fund raising project, also. This project is to have Fun building it and playing it.
