Directions: In transportation, the most precious cargo is the human passenger. Each year thousands of people are killed and injured in automobile accidents. What can be done to reduce this injury and death in automobiles?

Industrial products are designed so they serve a particular nee. Sometimes this need is for looks or style. Often it is a combination and function. The product is designed to be a particular job. In transportation, the job of the vehicle is to carry cargo.

In this activity, your problem is to design a safety vehicle. Your precious cargo will be an egg passenger. The four-wheeled vehicle will roll eight feet, and propelled by surgical tubing into a brick wall. The problem, can you design your vehicle so the passenger will not be injured? Different sized test vehicles will an interest to our test. Your vehicle can not exceed 6" in width and 15" in length.
  1. Locate and read "The Technology Engineering Activity - Safety Egg Vehicle Booklet"

  2. Locate and view the Safety Egg Vehicle video.

  3. Locate "Past" safety egg car vehicles; view the vehicles for designs and ideas.

  4. View the power point presentation on Safety Egg Cars.

  5. View and complete the Safety Tests - Drill Press, Scroll saw, Disc sander, 1" Belt Sander, Miter Box Saw, and Wood Hand Tools. Save to your portfolio

  6. Locate the Participation phase, read and make a selection of a partner or not, forward to this information to the instructor.

  7. View the Limitations rules, read and take notes - for further references.

  8. Locate Study sheets #1 and #2, complete the sheets and save to your portfolio.

  9. Now begin the Design phase by locating the design process - read and take notes, save to your portfolio.

  10. Locate Study sheets #3 and #4, complete the sheets and save to your portfolio.

  11. Locate your Thumbnail sketches and select one for the Final Draft. Read the final draft process before moving forward. Save your sketch to your portfolio.

  12. Begin the Final Draft and continue the design process, upon completion, see instructor - save to your portfolio.

  13. Continue with the Final Draft phase and then move to the construction phase. Referring to your final design foe reference.

  14. After completing some of the construction phase, you may want to test your vehicle Make evaluations and proceed.

  15. Finish the construction phase and locate the Test Platform, test your vehicle, this will provide you the opportunity to improve the performance of the vehicle and make any adjustments. Save

  16. Begin the finishing phase by painting, decals, and special features to your vehicle

  17. Take a digital picture of your vehicle and save to your portfolio.

  18. Prepare for the Final Test Day.

  19. Locate the Safety Egg Car Vehicle evaluation sheet; begin completing the evaluation process with instructor. This needs to be completed before the actual test run on the track. Save to your portfolio.

  20. After completing the Crash test, re-locate the evaluation sheet and complete the results for your final evaluation. Save to your portfolio.

  21. Locate the Module / Project critique sheet, complete the process and save to your portfolio.
